In the fall of 2023, what began as concerning symptoms for 4-year-old Kyngston quickly escalated into a terrifying medical crisis. He had been throwing up and growing weaker by the day. His mom, Keoni, knew that something wasn’t right, and that he was born with a rare blood disorder that could impact his care plan.
Kyngston was brought to the ER at a hospital near where he and his mom lived, but what should have been the beginning of a clear path to treatment instead became a series of critical missteps. After some incorrect protocols, Kyngston suffered a stroke and was later transported by ambulance while unresponsive. He suffered another stroke in the ambulance.
Everything changed on November 11, 2023, when he was brought to Manning Family Children’s. That day, his medical team finally identified what was going on. He was given the oxygen his body so desperately needed and was treated for multiple underlying infections that had previously gone unnoticed. Tests revealed he had both the coronavirus and rhinovirus at the same time. Slowly, with the care and support of the Manning Family Children’s PICU team, his condition began to stabilize. He is now learning how to walk again—rebuilding strength and making strides back to being a normal 5-year-old!
