Ryder was born at just 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound and 12 ounces. He was whisked away to the NICU while I recovered for several days in the intensive care unit at a New Orleans hospital. He was soon transported to the Manning Family Children’s NICU, where an expert neonatal team and a higher level of services would give him the best chance of survival.

Ryder spent 145 days in the Children’s NICU on a steady path of growth. The NICU staff became a second family, was a constant source of love and support for his family during a very difficult time.

Ryder is now a healthy, lively 11-year-old. Every year on his birthday, Ryder visits the  Manning Family Children’s NICU to thank they staff for saving his life and bring happiness and encouragement to the staff and families. This past holiday season, Ryder helped light up the campus with the annual tree lighting moment, and had the opportunity to attend the 43rd annual Sugarplum Ball, where he helped CEO Lou Fragoso give the welcoming toast, and later sang a solo of The Eye of The Tiger live on stage for more than 1,500 ball attendees. Ryder has come such a long way, and it’s incredible to see him thriving today.

“One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind, it will barely be visible in the distance. But the person you become in learning to get over it… that will stay with you forever. And that is the point of the mountain.” – Brianna Wiest
