In March of 2021, right in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic, then 7-year old Abron Frye wasn’t feeling himself. After a visit to see CHNOLA pediatrician Tammy Senentz at our Napoloen Pediatrics clinic, she referred the family to the Manning Family Children’s Emergency Department with a sense that something wasn’t right.
On March 23, 2021, the Frye family’s world came crashing down. Abron, was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Scans revealed that two-thirds of his cells were determined to be cancerous, and he had a large mass covering the left side of his chest.
Treatment needed to begin immediately, and he was hospitalized at Children’s that day, reassured by our team that they had a treatment plan, and the care here needed was available right here. For more than three years, Abron underwent chemotherapy, countless blood and platelet transfusions, and numerous procedures under the care of our Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, and with the support of his entire family.
Today Abron is doing amazingly well and so much better thanks to the entire staff of Manning Family Children’s. He rang the bell this past September, with the largest gathering of family and friends by his side, including Dr. Tammy Senentz and Dr. Rene Gardner who came back from retirement to celebrate this amazing milestone.
