Six-year-old Amir “AJ” Walker Jr. had always been full of energy, but something wasn’t right. Even as a toddler, AJ struggled to catch his breath after playtime and often snored loudly in his sleep. His mom, Jasmin Cheatham, thought it might be asthma—especially with a family history of respiratory issues—and learned to manage it with breathing treatments and patience. But when AJ’s breathing still hadn’t improved by 2024, Jasmin decided to dig deeper.

That decision changed everything. After an allergist visit at Manning Family Children’s in New Orleans, doctors discovered AJ had enlarged tonsils and adenoids that needed to be removed. The procedure went smoothly, but what his surgeon, Dr. J. Scott McMurray, noticed during surgery led to a CT scan—and a shocking diagnosis: AJ had a rare congenital heart condition called double aortic arch. The condition had gone undiagnosed his entire life and was pressing on his windpipe and esophagus, making every breath more difficult than it should have been.

AJ underwent heart surgery to correct the issue, performed by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Farshad Anvari. The procedure relieved the pressure around AJ’s airway, and his recovery began almost immediately. Today, AJ is back at school, breathing easy and dreaming big. He loves sports, tractors, and hopes to own a sugar cane farm one day. His mom is just thankful her son can finally breathe—and live—freely. “All I want is for him to be able to do whatever he wants in life,” Jasmin said.

“One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind, it will barely be visible in the distance. But the person you become in learning to get over it… that will stay with you forever. And that is the point of the mountain.” – Brianna Wiest
