Mykal’s journey with cancer began unexpectedly during her first semester of college. What started as a routine visit to update her immunizations quickly escalated when bloodwork revealed something concerning. Her doctor immediately sent her to the emergency room, and she soon found herself admitted to Manning Family Children’s for nearly three weeks as specialists worked to determine a diagnosis. It was during this time that she first met Dr. Zachary LeBlanc, who was surprised by her strength and energy despite what she was facing. Mykal was eventually diagnosed with aplastic anemia—a serious condition where the bone marrow fails to produce enough blood cells.

Initially, Mykal was strongly opposed to the idea of a bone marrow transplant. The procedure was daunting, and like any young person, she hoped there was another way. But when Dr. LeBlanc gently explained the potential consequences, including the very real risk that she might not live to see her 21st birthday, her perspective shifted. With her brother identified as a half-match donor, Mykal bravely moved forward with the transplant, understanding it was her best chance at survival. The procedure carried more risk than a full match would have, but her determination never wavered. She remained upbeat and focused on returning to the life she loved.

Four years later, Mykal is thriving. Her transplant was a success, and she has had no complications or symptoms since. She credits the team at Manning Family Children’s—especially Dr. LeBlanc—for their unwavering support, compassionate care, and commitment to making her feel at home throughout her treatment. Born and raised in New Orleans, Mykal is grateful to have received world-class care close to home. She knows her journey could have ended very differently, and she considers herself truly blessed to have come through it stronger, healthier, and full of life.

“One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind, it will barely be visible in the distance. But the person you become in learning to get over it… that will stay with you forever. And that is the point of the mountain.” – Brianna Wiest
